Project Overview

This Mosman deck had reached the end of its serviceable surface life, even though the underlying frame remained structurally sound. The old boards had swollen over time, closing the drainage gaps and allowing water to sit on the surface. Widespread rot followed. With the property being prepared for sale, the client wanted a smart, cost-effective upgrade that would deliver the appearance and performance of a new deck without replacing a frame that was still in good condition.

The Challenge

The main challenge was demolition. Years of finish had filled the screw heads, making normal removal almost impossible without damaging the joists below. We cut the old boards into sections, carefully broke them away, and ground off the remaining screws. Because the new fixings could not hit the old screw positions, the re-decking layout and hidden fixing system had to be planned precisely. Preserving the existing frame while creating clean drainage gaps and a neat finished surface was central to the job.

Scope of Work

  • Board Replacement
  • Buff Sanding
  • Joist Protection
  • Oiling
  • Tannin Removal

Materials Used

  • Framing: Existing structural frame retained and protected with G-Tape
  • Decking: Tallowwood Hardwood 86 x 19 mm
  • Fixings: Concealed deck fixing system
  • Finish: Cutek Extreme CD50, Gold Tone Double Strength

Our Approach & Process

Good re-decking starts with preserving what is still sound and correcting the details that caused the original surface to fail. Our approach focused on careful demolition, protecting the existing frame, restoring proper board spacing, and installing a durable new Tallowwood surface.

Careful Demolition & Frame Protection

We cut and removed the failed boards in controlled sections so the sound joists could be retained. Remaining screws were ground flush, the framing was checked, and G-Tape was installed over the joists to provide additional moisture protection before the new decking was fitted.

Tallowwood Installation & Finishing

New 86 x 19 mm Tallowwood boards were installed with consistent drainage gaps and a concealed fixing system positioned away from the old screw locations. The timber then received tannin activation and removal, light sanding, and two coats of Cutek Extreme CD50 in Gold Tone Double Strength.

The Final Result

The completed deck now has the clean lines, drainage and rich natural appearance expected from a new Tallowwood surface, while retaining the sound original frame beneath. The targeted solution avoided unnecessary structural replacement, kept the project cost-effective for the client, and delivered a polished outdoor area ready for the property sale.

Saba and his team did a great job completely replacing our old and rotting deck. We were under a lot of time pressure to get the job done and Saba stuck to his word of getting everything finished for us despite weather delays. We are thrilled with the new golden deck and really grateful for all their hard work.
