It is hard to know where to start. Saba and his team are outstanding for service, quality, attention to detail, cooperativeness, courtesy, communication and customer satisfaction. He had his dad working with him on our job and both are skilled carpenters, and demonstrated their knowledge, insights, capability and proficiency. Nothing was too hard for them and I was left in no doubt about their honesty and integrity. We were really pleased to have got to know them and to have had them on site. 100% we would without hesitation recommend them.
Spotted Gum Deck Restoration & Poolside Repair in Gladesville
Board replacement, structural poolside repairs, multi-stage sanding, levelling, and penetrating oil finishing.
- Timber: Spotted Gum, Treated Pine
- Size: Large (70-150m²)
- Completed in August 2026

Project Overview
This large Spotted Gum deck in Gladesville had remained structurally serviceable, but years of movement, moisture and wear had left the surface uneven and difficult to use. Many boards were heavily cupped, splintered or damaged beneath large pots, while the poolside section had dropped below the adjoining tiles. The owners wanted a safer, flatter deck for family use without the cost of a full rebuild, while preserving as much of the original hardwood as possible.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge was correcting several different problems without unnecessarily replacing the entire deck. Around the pool, the decking moved underfoot and the supporting galvanized brackets had deteriorated in the chlorinated environment. Elsewhere, wide boards had swollen until drainage gaps had almost disappeared, increasing water retention. Around 170 linear metres of decking required replacement, while many remaining boards needed aggressive levelling to reduce cupping and splintering without removing excessive timber.
Scope of Work
Materials Used
- Support System: Adjustable Pedestals & H3 Treated Pine
- Decking: Spotted Gum Hardwood (Replacement boards)
- Fixings: Stainless Steel Poolside Fixings
- Finish: Cutek Extreme CD50, Burnt Red Double Strength
Our Approach & Process
Restoring a large deck properly means solving the causes of movement and water retention before focusing on appearance. Our approach combined targeted structural repairs, extensive board replacement and careful surface levelling to retain the original Spotted Gum wherever practical.
Poolside Repairs & Board Reconstruction
We lifted the unstable poolside section, levelled the existing framing and installed adjustable pedestal supports beneath the joists with stainless steel fixings. Existing wide boards were resized where required to recreate drainage gaps, while approximately 170 linear metres of damaged Spotted Gum was replaced across the deck.
Multi-Stage Levelling & Finishing
The remaining deck was aggressively machine-sanded to reduce severe cupping and create a safer, flatter walking surface. Finer finishing passes then smoothed the timber before application of Cutek Extreme CD50 in Burnt Red Double Strength, producing a deep, rich tone while retaining the natural grain.
The Final Result
The completed deck is now noticeably flatter, safer and more comfortable underfoot. The unstable poolside section has been rebuilt into a solid, level area, drainage gaps have been restored and heavily damaged boards replaced. A rich Burnt Red penetrating finish brings the entire Spotted Gum deck together while keeping its natural timber character visible.
