Why Proper Deck Building Matters

A newly built deck can look beautiful on the day it is finished—but a lasting structure depends on what happens below the surface. If the subframe is poorly constructed, the deck can eventually sag, move or warp. Challenging site conditions, poor drainage and inadequate ground clearance can create further problems if they are not properly addressed from the start.

At DeckCare, we treat custom deck building as a complete structural system. By getting the foundations, subframe and framing right from the start, we give your new deck a solid base, ensure it remains safe under heavy use, and help it perform for years in Sydney conditions.

A lasting deck is built in the subframe, not just in the surface boards.

Our Complete Building System

We follow a precise, four-step construction methodology that prioritises long-term structural integrity over just a quick visual handover. Here is how we properly engineer and build your new deck.

  • Solid Subframe Construction

We pour deep concrete footings and build a robust treated pine subframe. We also use joist tape to prevent hidden moisture rot before laying any top boards.

Not All Decking Materials Are Built to Last

Homeowners often ask us to build with whatever timber is cheapest or currently trending at the local hardware store. Over the years, we have seen exactly which hardwoods weather beautifully in Sydney, which pine frames rot prematurely, and which decking profiles create moisture traps.

We do not treat material selection lightly. The right timber, fixings, and frame structure are chosen based on your location, sun exposure, and the long-term durability you want—not just what is easiest to source.

Need help understanding which timber is right for your home? We can explain the options during your site inspection.

Site Assessment & Quoting

DeckCare:

We assess ground levels, drainage, and structural footings required before providing a quote.

Other Contractors:

Often quote quickly based on square meterage without checking ground conditions.

Subframe Construction

DeckCare:

We build robust H3/H4 treated pine frames and apply protective joist tape to prevent hidden rot.

Other Contractors:

Often skip joist tape and use undersized timber spacing, leading to a bouncy or rotting deck.

Fixings & Screws

DeckCare:

We use 316 marine-grade stainless steel screws that won’t rust or snap over time.

Other Contractors:

May use cheaper galvanised screws or nail guns, which eventually rust and pop up.

Finishing Touches

DeckCare:

We seal the newly laid timber immediately with a premium penetrating oil to prevent warping.

Other Contractors:

Often leave raw timber completely exposed to the elements after handover.

What We Don't Cut Corners On

We do not believe in rushing the build or cutting corners on structural integrity just to finish the job faster. Our standard is built around precision carpentry.

  • Solid Foundations

Concrete footings are dug deep and set properly. We never just rest frames on loose soil or unstable pavers.

  • Precision Board Spacing

We ensure exact and consistent gaps between every board, allowing for proper water drainage and timber expansion.

  • Clean and Safe Sites

Your property is respected. We manage sawdust, remove all construction waste, and leave your yard spotless.

  • Built for the Long Term

Our goal isn't just to make the deck look good on handover day, but to ensure it remains structurally safe for decades.

This is the standard behind every custom deck we put our name to. If you want a building team that refuses to cut corners on your home’s structure, let’s inspect your site and discuss the right approach.

How We Quote Deck Building

Every property is different, which is why we never guess construction prices over the phone. We quote based on your specific site conditions, required groundworks, access restrictions, and the type of hardwood or composite decking you select.

Our goal is to provide a transparent, comprehensive construction plan. A good quote should do more than just show a final number—it should explain exactly what materials are being used and what is included in the scope of work. If we uncover hidden ground or drainage issues once we start digging footings, we will always discuss them clearly before proceeding.

How Pricing Works

We believe in transparent pricing right from the start. To give you a rough idea of what to expect, we’ve outlined our most common building and carpentry scenarios below. Your final quote will depend on the site conditions, chosen materials, design complexity, and access.

This is a complete end-to-end service for a new outdoor space. It involves everything from the initial design and structural planning to pouring new footings, building the frame, laying the decking boards, and applying the final protective oil.

Guide Price: from $1,250 + GST per m²

Ideal for severely rotted decks where the old structure must be demolished. We remove the unsafe materials and reconstruct the deck in the same footprint. This includes a brand new treated pine subframe and the installation of fresh hardwood or composite boards.

Guide Price: from $1,000 + GST per m²

If your deck is generally sound but has isolated issues, we offer targeted carpentry services. This covers the replacement of a few rotted boards, fixing broken stairs, or securing loose balustrades, without the need for full subframe reconstruction.

Guide Price: from $195 + GST per hour for a team of two carpenters, plus materials.

Note: These guide prices serve as a baseline for standard timber builds. Final costs may vary depending on material upgrades (e.g., premium composite or rare hardwoods), complex ground leveling, elevated structures, or council approval requirements. An exact quote is provided after a physical site inspection.

We originally asked Saba to look at refreshing our deck and stairs. It quickly became apparent that the stairs should be replaced. Saba and Dimitri did a fantastic job and we can't believe how much better the deck and stairs look. Saba and Dimitri were absolute gentlemen to deal with and we wouldn't hesitate to have them back. Good people, great result, very fair price. Very happy customer. It's not hard to tell from the photos which are the "before" and which are the "after"!

    Common Questions About Deck Building

Every custom build is different, but the core questions are often the same. Below are some of the most frequent questions we get regarding decking materials, construction timelines, and structural warranties.

If you are not sure whether your current deck needs a repair or a complete rebuild, book a free site inspection and we’ll talk you through it.

It entirely depends on the condition of your subframe. If the treated pine joists and bearers underneath are solid and free of rot, we can often just replace the decking boards. However, if the frame is compromised or unsafe, putting new boards on it is a waste of your money. We will inspect the frame and give you an honest assessment.

Both have their place. Natural hardwoods (like Merbau or Spotted Gum) offer a beautiful, authentic look and stay cooler in the Sydney sun, but they require regular oiling. Composite decking requires much less maintenance but can get quite hot under direct sunlight and has a different aesthetic. We’ll help you weigh the pros and cons based on your yard’s exposure and your lifestyle.

A deck usually fails from the inside out. We use high-quality H3 treated pine for our subframes and specifically apply waterproof joist tape over the timber before laying the decking boards. This stops water from pooling around the screws and penetrating the joists, significantly extending the life of the entire structure.

Yes. There is a common myth that new hardwood needs to “weather” for months before coating. In reality, leaving raw timber exposed to the harsh Sydney weather causes it to dry out, warp, and crack rapidly. As part of our standard build, we apply a high-quality penetrating oil to protect the wood from day one.

In many cases, low-level decks (under a certain height and size threshold) fall under Exempt or Complying Development (CDC), meaning you don’t need a lengthy council approval. However, if your deck is elevated, large, or close to a boundary, a DA might be required. We can advise you on the general rules during our site visit.

Yes, we handle the full cycle. If your project involves replacing an old, unsafe structure, our quote will include the safe demolition of the existing deck, removal of all waste from your property, and clearing the site before we begin laying the new footings.

Timelines vary based on the size of the deck, the complexity of the design (like stairs or screens), and site access. A standard ground-level deck might take 1 to 2 weeks, while a larger, elevated custom build can take longer. We will give you a clear estimated timeline along with your quote.

We stand by our carpentry. Every new structural deck we build comes with a 10-year workmanship warranty, extendable to 25 years when you join our Annual Maintenance Program. We also provide clear handover and ongoing care guidance for your specific timber or composite decking to help maximise its long-term performance.
