DeckCare team did an outstanding job bringing our spotted gum deck back to life. It had gone grey and blotchy but the after photos speak for themselves.. The colour is deep and even across every board and the grain is popping again. What really stood out was the attention to detail in the fiddly parts: the built-in bench seat, the planter box surround and the wraparound steps all came up just as well as the open decking. Communication was easy from the first quote, the team turned up when they said they would, worked cleanly and left the place tidy. Highly DeckCare to anyone thinking their deck is past saving ours clearly wasn't. Thanks again for the great work.
Spotted Gum Deck Restoration & Colour Correction in Naremburn
Full stripping, rejuvenation, nylon brush sanding, colour correction, and premium protective finishing.
- Timber: Spotted Gum Hardwood
- Size: Medium (30-70m²)
- Completed in August 2026

Project Overview
This relatively new Spotted Gum rear deck was less than five years old, yet its finish had already become noticeably patchy and uneven. The original installation had not received the right timber preparation before coating, and later DIY recoating only increased the colour variation. The owners wanted to bring the deck back closer to the lighter, natural appearance of Spotted Gum, while establishing a professional finish system that would be easier to maintain consistently in the years ahead.
The Challenge
The challenge was not structural deterioration, but achieving a consistent result across different areas of the property. A much older section of decking had to be visually blended with the newer deck, together with floating benches, steps and vertical timber elements. With three large dogs relying on the rear area every day, the work also had to be carefully sequenced around drying times so access was restricted for as little time as practical without compromising the finish.
Scope of Work
Materials Used
- Decking: Existing Spotted Gum Hardwood
- Existing Finish: Intergrain UltraDeck (removed)
- Primer: Haymes UVEX Primer
- Finish: Haymes Dexpress Natural (2 coats)
Our Approach & Process
Restoring a relatively young deck is often about correcting preparation and coating issues before they become bigger problems. On this Naremburn project, our focus was to remove the inconsistent existing finish, bring the Spotted Gum back to a clean and balanced base, and carefully coordinate every stage so the different deck sections and detailed timber elements would finish as one cohesive outdoor space.
Stripping, Rejuvenation & Surface Preparation
We fully stripped the existing Intergrain UltraDeck coating and rejuvenated the timber to remove residue and restore a clean surface. The deck, benches, steps and vertical elements were then prepared with nylon brush sanding and fine finishing work, helping even out the appearance while preserving the natural character and grain of the Spotted Gum.
Colour Matching & Protective Finishing
Once the timber was properly prepared, we applied Haymes UVEX Primer followed by two coats of Haymes Dexpress Natural. Careful colour balancing helped visually connect the older and newer deck sections, while the staged application schedule kept disruption to the household and their dogs as short as practical.
The Final Result
The completed deck now has a far more even, natural Spotted Gum appearance, with the lighter timber character and grain visible again instead of the previous patchiness. The older and newer sections sit together much more cohesively, and the owners were extremely pleased with the transformation. The deck is now properly protected and well set up for straightforward annual maintenance going forward.
