Beautiful Hardwood Needs a Solid Base

We often get asked to simply lay expensive hardwood over an old, existing frame to save on construction costs. While we understand the desire for a quick visual upgrade, structural longevity and aesthetics are an integrated system. Laying premium timber over a failing, uneven, or rotting subframe makes the new wood highly vulnerable to immediate warping and structural failure.

To ensure your investment is truly protected and visually perfect, hardwood installation must be immediately preceded by robust framing, and followed by the right nourishing finish. That’s why we focus on complete construction, ensuring the job is done properly from start to finish.

The Hardwood Installation Process

Proper hardwood decking is about much more than just cutting wood and driving screws. It requires careful timber selection, the right acclimation process, and a meticulous installation approach to ensure the boards lay perfectly flat. Here is exactly how we install your new deck.

  • Timber Acclimation & Frame Check

You can’t install natural hardwood safely if the timber hasn't adjusted to your local environment. Laying "green" or un-acclimated wood will cause it to shrink, warp, and pop screws, ruining the deck entirely. Before any new wood is laid, we ensure the timber has stabilised, and we manually inspect the underlying subframe, applying waterproof joist tape to the bearers. This ensures a completely safe foundation and protects the structural integrity of the expensive hardwood above.

  • Board Alignment & Spacing

Once the structure is prepped, we begin laying the premium timber—whether it’s Merbau, Spotted Gum, or Blackbutt. This stage is designed to seamlessly match the specific architectural lines of your home. Our goal here is to return a flawless finish, cutting the new boards to exact lengths, staggering the joins perfectly, and ensuring consistent 4-5mm gaps between every board for proper water drainage and natural expansion.

  • Precision Fixing & Initial Sealing

Laying the boards leaves the deck looking solid, but installation must be structurally precise. The final step is a careful fixing and sealing process. We pre-drill every hole in the hardwood and secure the boards using 316 marine-grade stainless steel screws (or hidden fixing systems). Proper fixing is crucial—it prevents the timber from twisting. Immediately after installation, we apply the first coat of premium penetrating oil to lock in moisture and protect the raw wood from the sun.

Common Questions About Hardwood Decking

Installing premium hardwood can be a complex process if not handled correctly, resulting in uneven boards or severe warping. Below are the answers to the most common questions we receive about building with timber in Sydney. If you have a specific concern about your design, feel free to reach out.

It depends on your aesthetic preference and location. Spotted Gum is incredibly durable, fire-resistant, and offers a beautiful, varied grain. Merbau is highly popular due to its rich red colour, natural resistance to termites, and lower cost. Blackbutt is excellent if you prefer a lighter, blonde timber look. We will show you samples and guide you based on your home’s exposure.

Hidden fastening systems create a flawless, “screw-free” architectural look, which is stunning for premium hardwoods. However, they can be more expensive to install. Traditional top-screwing (using marine-grade stainless steel screws) is the strongest and most reliable method, and when the screws are perfectly aligned, it creates a classic, high-end nautical aesthetic.

Yes. It is a common myth that new hardwood should be left to “weather” for months. In Sydney’s harsh climate, leaving raw timber exposed will cause it to dry out, surface-check (crack), and turn grey very quickly. We apply a high-quality penetrating oil as soon as the installation is complete to stabilise the timber and protect your investment.

Yes, Merbau contains natural tannins that will bleed (leach a brown dye) when it first gets wet. If your deck is built over light-coloured paving or concrete, we take specific precautions. We can chemically wash the timber to draw out the excess tannins before installation, or apply specific sealants to minimise the bleeding process and protect your surrounding property.
