Balcony Repair & Deck Restoration in Manly Vale
Structural edge repairs, new balustrade, Spotted Gum decking, stripping, sanding, and colour-matched finishing.
- Timber: Spotted Gum, Merbau, Treated Pine
- Size: Small (under 30m²)
- Completed in August 2026

Project Overview
This Manly Vale balcony needed a practical upgrade rather than a complete rebuild. The exposed outer edge had deteriorated, while most of the existing Spotted Gum decking remained serviceable. The owners wanted a cost-effective solution that would make the area safe, solid, and enjoyable for the next 3–5 years before a planned renovation. Our approach combined targeted structural repairs, a new balustrade system, selective decking replacement, and a full restoration of the remaining timber.
The Challenge
The main challenge was safety. The balcony edge felt loose underfoot, several boards and the outer joist were rotten, and the existing balustrade posts and rails were no longer securely fixed. At the same time, replacing the entire deck would have been unnecessary and poor value for the owners’ plans. We also had to blend new Spotted Gum with aged timber covered by multiple layers of paint, creating a structurally sound repair that still looked cohesive and intentional.
Scope of Work
Materials Used
- Framing: 140x45 H3 Treated Pine
- Decking & Balustrade: Spotted Gum decking, Merbau posts and rails
- Fixings: Stainless Steel Screws, Galvanised Bolts & Brackets, Stainless Steel Wires
- Finish: Haymes Dexpress Finish (Light Oak & Natural); Dulux Weathershield fascia coating
Our Approach & Process
Rather than overbuilding the balcony, we focused on the areas that genuinely needed intervention. Careful carpentry, stronger edge framing, improved balustrade support, and thorough timber preparation allowed us to extend the useful life of the existing deck while creating a clean, integrated finish.
Structural Edge Rebuild & Balustrade
We cut the existing decking back to a sound joist, installed new treated-pine edge framing, blocking and support for a breaker board, then laid new Spotted Gum along the perimeter. New Merbau posts and rails with stainless steel wires created a much more solid balustrade, while a double-primed pine fascia was filled, sanded, and finished with two coats of exterior paint.
Full Stripping, Sanding & Colour Matching
The remaining Spotted Gum was covered by multiple old paint layers, so we chemically stripped the full balcony, rejuvenated the timber, and carefully sanded it level without damaging the existing screws. New timber was also treated to activate and remove tannins before finishing. Light Oak and Natural Dexpress tones were then combined to visually match the aged and new Spotted Gum.
The Final Result
The finished balcony feels completely different: secure at the edge, solid underfoot, and visually unified from old timber to new. Targeted repairs avoided the cost of an unnecessary full rebuild, while the restored Spotted Gum, new balustrade, and painted fascia created a result the owners can confidently enjoy until their future renovation.
