A Rebuild Requires Proper Finishing

We often encounter homeowners who want a deck rebuilt quickly, planning to leave the raw timber exposed to weather naturally. While we understand the appeal of a raw look, structural safety and timber longevity are an integrated system. Leaving a freshly built hardwood deck completely untreated makes the new wood highly vulnerable to immediate moisture absorption, UV damage, and severe splitting.

To ensure your new investment is truly protected and structurally sound for decades, the rebuild must be immediately followed by a professional sealing process and the right nourishing finish. That’s why we focus on complete construction, ensuring the job is done properly from start to finish.

The Deck Rebuilding Process

A proper deck rebuild is about much more than just tearing down old wood and putting up new boards. It requires careful demolition, structural engineering for the new frame, and a meticulous installation approach to ensure the new structure outlasts the old one. Here is exactly how we rebuild your deck.

  • Safe Demolition & Site Clearing

You can’t build a safe deck on top of decaying debris. Ripping out timber haphazardly can damage surrounding walls, landscaping, and underlying pipes. Before any new wood is brought in, we manually dismantle the failing structure, carefully extract old footings, and remove all rotted timber and waste from your property. This ensures a completely clean, safe foundation and protects the structural integrity of your home.

  • Engineering the New Subframe

Once the site is prepped, we construct the new foundation using premium H3 Treated Pine. This stage is designed to safely correct any previous leveling issues and support heavy loads. Our goal here is to return the structural core to a flawless state, digging deep concrete footings, spacing joists correctly, and applying waterproof joist tape without cutting any corners.

  • Premium Board Installation

A solid frame leaves the deck secure, but the surface installation must be precise. The final step is a careful fixing process. We ensure consistent gaps for water drainage, pre-drill the chosen hardwood, and secure the boards using 316 marine-grade stainless steel screws. Proper fixing is crucial—it allows the new timber to expand and contract naturally rather than warping or popping screws out of the surface.

Common Questions About Deck Rebuilding

Demolishing and rebuilding a deck can be a highly disruptive process if not handled correctly. Below are the answers to the most common questions we receive about completely rebuilding timber decks in Sydney. If you have a specific concern about your deck's safety, feel free to reach out.

It always comes down to the subframe. If the main bearers and joists supporting the deck are heavily rotted, spongy, or infested with termites, the structure is unsafe and must be rebuilt. If the frame is completely solid and only the top boards are splintering or weathered, a restoration or board replacement is usually sufficient.

Yes. Our rebuild service includes full site management. We safely demolish the existing structure, load the old timber and debris into skip bins, and manage all waste removal, leaving your property clean and ready for the new construction.

In some rare cases, if the original footings were poured correctly and are still structurally sound, they can be reused. However, many old decks failed because the footings were inadequate or have shifted over time. We assess the existing footings during demolition; if they are unsafe, we will dig and pour new concrete foundations.

If the new deck is being built in the exact same footprint, height, and dimensions as the original (a “like-for-like” replacement), it often falls under Exempt Development and does not require a DA. However, if you are expanding the size, changing the height, or living in a heritage or bushfire zone, approvals may be needed. We can help clarify this during our site inspection.
