This Balgowlah project involved restoring approximately 70m² of Merbau decking together with a matching privacy screen. The deck itself remained structurally solid, but the existing Intergrain UltraDeck coating had become patchy, faded, and visibly peeling after years of use. The client wanted to refresh the entire outdoor area with a quality restoration rather than a cosmetic touch-up, bringing back the natural character of the timber and improving the overall presentation of the property for the years ahead.
The main challenge was removing the old coating completely and evenly from both the horizontal decking and the vertical privacy screen without damaging otherwise sound Merbau underneath. Years of coating build-up had hidden much of the natural grain and created an inconsistent, painted-looking surface. Because the client wanted a proper long-term restoration, every section needed to be stripped back, rejuvenated, and sanded consistently before the new coating system could be applied across the deck and screen as one uniform finish.
A durable restoration depends on removing the failed coating rather than simply applying another layer over it. We prepared the Merbau deck and privacy screen as one complete system, taking the timber back to a clean, even base before rebuilding protection with primer and two finish coats for a consistent, high-quality result.
We chemically stripped the old Intergrain UltraDeck coating from the full deck and privacy screen, followed by a complete rejuvenating wash to clean and neutralise the timber. Once dry, the Merbau was carefully buff sanded to remove remaining inconsistencies and restore a smooth, clean surface with the natural grain visible again.
Once preparation was complete, we applied one coat of Haymes UVEX Primer across the decking and privacy screen, followed by two coats of Haymes Dexpress in Natural. This system produced a rich, warm brown appearance while preserving clear visibility of the Merbau grain and creating a durable, uniform finish across the entire outdoor area.
The completed deck and privacy screen now have a clean, consistent appearance with the peeling and patchy old coating fully removed. The Merbau grain is visible again through a rich natural-brown finish, giving the entire outdoor area a much fresher and more refined presentation. The restoration achieved the quality finish the client wanted while preserving the existing solid timber and leaving the space looking renewed and ready for continued use.
