Mosman Tallowwood Re-Decking

Stripping, sanding, premium oiling, localized framing repairs, and rotten board replacement.

When we first inspected this deck in Cammeray, it had clearly seen better days. The owners loved their large outdoor space and wanted to restore the timber rather than completely tearing it down. However, years of harsh weather and a failing surface coating had taken their toll. Our primary goal was to salvage as much of the original hardwood as possible, while ensuring the underlying structure was safe, solid, and ready for another decade of heavy use.
During the initial wash and inspection, we uncovered that the surface wear was only half the story. Water ingress had caused significant rot in several underlying joists and bearers, making isolated sections of the deck structurally unsafe. Additionally, the old film-forming coating had baked deep into the timber, requiring heavy-duty stripping before any sanding could even begin. The main challenge was integrating the new structural framing and replacement boards with the older, weathered timber so they would blend seamlessly once oiled.
A beautiful, long-lasting finish is 90% preparation. We don’t believe in just painting over problems. Here is a look behind the scenes at the steps we took to rebuild the structural integrity and restore the natural character of this Cammeray deck.
Before focusing on the surface, we had to ensure the deck was safe to use. We removed the severely rotted sections, rebuilt the failing treated pine framing underneath, and seamlessly integrated new premium Merbau boards with the existing structure.
The previous film-forming finish was peeling and trapping moisture inside the timber.
The old film-forming coating was peeling, trapping moisture and accelerating the rot. We chemically stripped the failed finish and performed a deep neutralising wash. This was followed by a multi-stage buff sanding process to return the hardwood to its raw, clean state.
