Chemical Stripping
We remove failing coatings properly, including finish lodged between boards and on detailed or vertical surfaces where mechanical sanding alone simply cannot reach.

We restore weathered, faded, and failing timber decks through a complete preparation system. Instead of a quick cosmetic refresh, our process includes chemical stripping, timber rejuvenation, controlled sanding, and three coats of penetrating oil.

A deck can look better for a short time after a basic sand and recoat—but a lasting restoration always depends on what happens before the finish is applied. If an existing coating is failing, it needs to be removed properly. If the timber is heavily weathered or uneven, it needs more than just a surface-level cosmetic refresh.
At DeckCare, we treat restoration as a full preparation system. By properly preparing the wood, we give the timber a better chance to absorb the finish deeply, look more even, and hold up significantly longer in the Sydney weather.
A good restoration is built in the preparation, not just in the finish.

We have developed a precise, four-step methodology that focuses on long-term performance rather than just a quick visual fix. Here is how we properly prepare and protect your timber.

Once the old coating is removed, we chemically treat and neutralise the timber. This restores the wood's PH balance, draws out deep stains, and prepares it perfectly for sanding.

We use specialised nylon brush sanding because it is much gentler on the deck. It typically removes less than 1mm of timber, which helps protect board thickness, preserves your screw fixings, and extends the long-term life of the deck compared to aggressive belt sanding.

We finish the system by applying 3 coats of premium penetrating oil. Instead of sitting on the surface, this system nourishes the wood from the inside out, protecting it and restoring its natural look.

Homeowners often come to us with decks previously coated in familiar retail products like Cabot’s, Intergrain UltraDeck, Feast Watson, or Aqualis H2O. Over the years, we have seen exactly which systems weather better, which create maintenance nightmares, and which are likely to peel and fail.
We do not treat finish selection lightly. The right system is chosen based on your timber, the existing coating, and the long-term result you want—not just what happens to be popular on a hardware store shelf.
Need help understanding which finish is right for your deck? We can explain the options during your inspection.
We assess coating failure, timber condition, and visible repair needs before quoting.
Often quote quickly based only on surface appearance.
We use chemical stripping to safely remove finish from between boards and detailed areas.
Often rely on sanding alone, leaving old finish trapped in hard-to-reach areas.
We use nylon brush sanding (removing <1mm) to protect board thickness and fixings.
May use aggressive belt sanding that removes more material and shortens board life.
We select systems based on long-term performance and maintainability.
Often reapply whatever is familiar or easiest to source.
We offer annual maintenance or clear DIY guidance after restoration.
Often finish the job without a clear long-term care path.
We do not believe in surface-level restoration or cutting corners to save time or product. Our standard is built around attention to detail.
Walls and glass footings are protected, not left splashed with oil.
We use correct decking applicators for an even finish, ensuring detailed coverage between boards.
Premium oil is expensive, but we never apply it too lightly just to save material costs. Proper nourishment is the priority.
A result designed to be easier to maintain going forward, not just look good on handover day.
This is the standard behind every restoration we put our name to. If you want a team that refuses to cut corners on your home, let’s inspect your deck and discuss the right approach.
Every deck is different, which is why we never guess the price over the phone. We quote based on the actual condition of your timber, the existing finish, access requirements, and any visible repairs needed before restoration can begin.
Our goal is to provide a clear, comprehensive recommendation. A good quote should do more than just show a final number—it should explain exactly what is included in the scope of work. If we uncover deeper structural issues after stripping or cleaning the deck, we will always discuss them with you clearly before any additional work proceeds.

View Example QuoteWe believe in transparent pricing right from the start. To give you a rough idea of what to expect, we’ve outlined the most common restoration scenarios below. Your final quote will depend on the existing finish, the level of preparation required, access, and any visible repairs.
This is usually the most straightforward restoration scenario. Because the deck was previously treated with a penetrating oil rather than a film-forming varnish, it doesn’t require heavy chemical stripping. The timber simply needs a deep neutralising wash, proper surface preparation, and re-oiling.
Guide Price: from $75 + GST per m²
This scenario requires much heavier preparation. When an old acrylic stain or varnish begins to peel and trap moisture, the failing coating must be completely removed before any sanding or oiling can begin. We use professional chemical stripping to break down the old layer safely.
Guide Price: from $85 + GST per m²
Restoring a deck back to its lighter, natural hardwood look after it has been coated in multiple layers of dark tint is one of the most preparation-heavy options. All old layers must be meticulously stripped and sanded back to bare timber before the new finish can be applied.
Guide Price: from $90 + GST per m²
Elevated decks, apartments, or areas with tight access require different logistics. Equipment must be carried manually, and there are often stricter controls on water runoff and dust extraction. Because of this, these projects require more labour per square metre and are assessed individually on-site.
Guide Price: from $110 + GST per m²
Note: These guide prices are for the restoration process only. Any required carpentry, structural repairs, or board replacements are quoted separately after a physical inspection.
We don’t just finish the job and walk away. Our restoration service is a comprehensive package designed to prepare your timber correctly, apply the right finish, and ensure it is easy to maintain for years to come.
From faded oil finishes to complex chemical stripping, these recent projects show how our preparation system performs in real Sydney conditions.

We are based in Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore, delivering high-quality deck restoration, building and repair services. While these are our core areas, we regularly complete projects across all Sydney suburbs. For larger or more complex projects, we’re also available to travel outside our main service areas.

We focus on the details that make a restoration feel properly handled—from clear communication and thorough preparation to the final result.

Outstanding service from Saba and his team delivered in full on time to specification!

Very good service, family owned and it shows in the communication and care they give to the job. Very impressed with the outcomes from an old weather beaten deck. Highly recommend.

Working with DeckCare was a painless experience from start to finish. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a deck restoration
Every deck project is different, but the core problems are often the same. Below are some of the most frequent questions we get regarding the restoration process, timelines, and long-term maintenance.
If you are not sure your deck is suitable for restoration, book a free inspection and we’ll talk you through it.
It depends on the subframe. If the underlying joists and bearers are rotting or structurally unsafe, rebuilding is required. If the frame is solid but the surface boards are weathered, faded, or peeling, a full restoration is usually the right path. We assess this during our inspection.
Yes, but it requires heavy preparation. Peeling indicates a failing film-forming finish. We use heavy-duty chemical stripping to break down and remove the old coating completely before any sanding begins, ensuring the new oil can actually penetrate the timber.
Not all finishes perform the same. Many common retail products sit on the surface like a plastic film, which eventually cracks and peels in the Sydney sun. We use premium penetrating oils (like Cutek) that nourish the timber from the inside out, looking more natural and making future maintenance much easier.
Most projects take between 2 to 4 days, depending on the size of the deck and the weather. This allows proper time for chemical stripping, drying, sanding, and applying three coats of oil with appropriate curing time between coats.
The price depends heavily on the existing coating (stripping old varnish takes longer than washing faded oil), the condition of the timber, the size of the deck, and access logistics. Any required carpentry repairs are also quoted separately after our physical inspection.
Every full deck restoration we complete is backed by a 12-month workmanship warranty. We stand by the quality of our preparation and application process.
Yes. The key to a long-lasting deck is regular upkeep. We offer annual maintenance services where we professionally wash and recoat the timber before it starts to weather heavily, preventing the need for future heavy sanding.
Absolutely. If you prefer the DIY route, we will provide you with clear guidance on what products to use and how to clean and recoat your deck properly to maintain the finish we’ve created.
If you are not sure whether your deck needs restoration, repairs or a rebuild, we can inspect it properly, explain the right scope and provide a clear quote before any work begins.
